CV of Ms. Kate Moore
Kate Moore is a senior lecturer in English translation studies at the School of Modern Languages and Translation Studies at the University of Tampere, Finland.
She has published numerous articles on speech communication and oral history and has co-authored language text books and an English-Finnish dictionary.
She has also contributed to the Dictionary of American Family Names published by Oxford University Press, has written on multilingual issues for Macmillan’s publication online, and has served on the advisory board of the Spanish journal Historia, Antropología y Fuentes Orales.
Moore has conducted Academic Writing workshops in many of the universities in Finland as well as in Belgium and Portugal. She has also taught writing in China at the Communication University of China in Beijing and at Fudan University in Shanghai.
Before coming to Finland as a Fulbright Scholar in cross-cultural studies, Moore was a lecturer and teaching fellow at Columbia University in New York. She has studied Finnish at Columbia University and at the University of Helsinki.
Born a duel citizen of the US and Britain, Moore recently became a citizen of Finland.
Requirements to participators and
the schedule of the workshop
These participators are supposed to be graduate students either working on a thesis or an article for publishing, or teachers in advanced training who want to write for journals, etc. The class could have as many as 18-20 participators.
The first day involves tips and instruction on English Academic writing, including short cuts to reduce time in producing texts. The second day is a practical application of what was learned on Day 1, and the participators bring a sample of their writing (3 pages with 5 copies).
During the second day of the workshop, they first learn a 10-step process of editing. They then form groups to edit collaboratively. Each member of a group has 3 other people going 7 times through their text, each time searching for one feature of the writing. After each pass through their text, the group members give feedback to the author. After the seven passes through the text, the group offers an overall evaluation of the texts. The result is that each participant will get very detailed feedback and recommendations on what to focus on to improve his or her writing.
